New warnings about the hellebore caterpillar: German waterways closed
The so-called hellebore caterpillar is spreading unusually quickly around Berlin. Parts of the large Spreewald nature reserve outside the German capital are now being completely closed, the state of Brandenburg announced.
The poisonous larvae of the oak processionary moth have spread terror in Denmark this summer, where the plague has now reached Copenhagen. But the spread is also described as severe in Germany.
To protect tourists in the popular Spreewald, waterways used for kayaking, among other things, have been closed, reports the DPA news agency.
The poisonous hairs of the “hellebore caterpillars” come off easily and can then be spread several kilometers by the wind. They can cause painful and difficult-to-heal injuries.
