US Senator Lindsey Graham is dead. He died on Saturday evening after a sudden illness, his staff writes on X. According to NBC News, an ambulance was called to his home on Saturday evening about a cardiac arrest.

The Republican was one of Donald Trump's most loyal supporters. In an interview in June, the president described him as "incredible".

- He has been by my side for a long time, Trump said according to The Washington Post.

Graham ran for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2016 election, but ended his campaign in December 2015 of the same year due to low voter support.

Lindsey Graham was 71 years old. 

Graham met with Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday – mourned as a “close friend” in Israel

Senator Lindsey Graham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv as recently as Friday, just a day before his death, NBC News reports.

Graham was one of Washington’s most influential voices on foreign affairs, and has served as US envoy to Ukraine and pushed for increased sanctions against Russia. He was also an ardent advocate of US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Several Israeli ministers say the country has lost a “close friend” in Graham.

“Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and the United States are inseparable,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement according to AFP.

The Republican senator died of a sudden illness on Saturday evening. He was 71 years old.

Trump on Graham: “He was a true American patriot”

Donald Trump has commented on the passing of his loyal colleague Lindsey Graham. In a post on Truth social, the president writes that the 71-year-old was one of the “best people and senators I have ever met”.

“He always worked and was a true American patriot”, writes Trump and adds that he is so saddened by the news.

Lindsey was one of Trump’s most loyal supporters. In an interview with the BBC in 2023, he stated that Trump has “a dark side”.

– But I stand by him because I see what he is doing, said Lindsey, highlighting, among other things, Trump’s border policy and the US killing of Iran’s Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
