Was going to see ancient art – everyone on board is now dead
All flights over the popular tourist attraction were canceled on Friday.
When they resumed, tragedy struck immediately.
13 people, including eleven European tourists, have died in a plane crash in southern Peru.
A small aircraft, a Cessna Caravan C-208, took off from the airport in Pisco just after lunch on Saturday, local time.
The idea was that it would fly over the Nazca Lines, a popular archaeological tourist attraction with a large number of geoglyphs that attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
But within an hour of taking off, the plane crashed and everyone on board died.
Alarm raised – then the sound disappeared
The Ministry of Transport and Communications in Peru states that the pilot and guide as well as eleven tourists – seven Italians, two Germans and two Spaniards – have been confirmed dead.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
The Peruvian newspaper La República writes that the crew reported an emergency to the control tower 50 minutes into the flight.
Shortly afterwards, all radio contact was lost.
Violent gusts of wind
Just the day before the accident, all air traffic over the area was suspended.
On Friday, violent gusts of wind of up to 50 kilometers per hour had hit the province of Pisco in the Ica region. According to the Andina News Agency, two aircraft had to be diverted that day.
