UN Report: World Misses 1.5 Degrees Target

The world will exceed the global target of 1.5 degrees of warming within the next few years, according to a new report from the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

The best-case scenario is now 1.8 degrees.

“Around the world, extreme heat waves are already showing that the consequences of climate change are coming faster, hitting harder and lasting longer,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Program in a press release.

Instead of staying below the target, it is believed that we must now focus on limiting the duration of exceeding the target as quickly as possible. This should be done by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The management of the forest fires raging in Indonesia may be made more difficult by the weather phenomenon El Niño, says the country's Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, according to Reuters.

Forest fires in Borneo and Sumatra, among other places, have been going on for several weeks. By the end of August, the situation had calmed down a bit, but there is a risk that it will get worse again as the weather gets drier and temperatures rise.

– Our problems are not over. September is the peak of El Niño. September is the most important fight for us, says Juli Antoni.

Large parts of the fires are believed to have been started by private individuals or companies.
