During a visit to the country, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Iceland has long been a "critical outpost" for security in the region.

Rubio arrived in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, on Monday and has held talks with the country's Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, and Foreign Minister Thorgerour Katrín Gunnarsdóttir.

At a press conference, Rubio said that Iceland has long served as "a critical outpost for monitoring covert activities and deterring our adversaries."

In early September, US President Donald Trump sparked controversy by sharing an AI-generated map that appeared to show Iceland as part of the United States. Iceland responded by summoning the US ambassador and labeling the image "completely inappropriate."

Gunnarsdóttir says the matter has now been resolved, and she also welcomes the US agreement with Greenland.
