Ambassador summoned following suspected murder
Japan has summoned the US ambassador in Tokyo in connection with a suspected murder that is now contributing to rising tensions between the two countries.
The incident involves a 20-year-old US Marine stationed in Okinawa Prefecture who is suspected of murdering a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in the city of Naha.
The suspected murder reportedly took place on Saturday, according to the Japanese TV channel NHK.
The US military presence in Okinawa has periodically drawn criticism from the local community, particularly regarding criminal offenses committed by US military personnel. Japan is now demanding that the US military fully cooperate with the investigation into the suspected murder.
