Government forces make gains in Tigray
Ethiopian government forces are now present in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, an aid agency source has told AFP.
On Friday, it was reported that the "Tigray Peace Force" militia—comprising fighters from the northern Tigray region who have allied themselves with the Ethiopian government—had seized the airport in Mekelle.
A source now states that both government troops and allied forces have been spotted at several locations within the capital.
Reports of fierce fighting between government troops and rebel forces seeking independence for the region have been circulating for over a week, with clashes occurring on multiple fronts.
These events have raised concerns about a return to the devastating civil war fought between 2020 and 2022—involving the Tigray People's Liberation Front and the central government's military—which claimed the lives of approximately 600,000 people.
