Unauthorized parties have gained access to information—including names, addresses, and personal identification numbers—belonging to 8.8 million people in the Danish Civil Registration System (CPR), Danish media report.

The leak occurred when one or more individuals misused a Danish company's authorized access to search the CPR registry, the Ministry of Higher Education and Science states in a press release.

Denmark has just over 6 million inhabitants, but the leak also includes data on individuals who have died or emigrated.

Individuals with undisclosed identities or protected addresses have not been affected. The matter is being investigated by the police and has been reported to the Danish Data Protection Agency.

"I urge all residents to be vigilant," says the responsible minister, Christina Egelund, in the press release.
