Zelenskyy: US wants negotiations in October

The US wants a new round of peace talks involving Russia and Ukraine this month, Zelenskyy says, according to AFP.

"The US side is currently in contact with Ukraine and Russia and is proposing a trilateral meeting at the official level before the end of October," he says.

Ukraine agrees to this and envisions talks taking place in, for example, the United Arab Emirates, which has hosted such meetings previously.

The Kremlin signaled openness to talks in October last month but has provided no further details.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, shortly after Russia attacked a bridge in the Ukrainian capital, AFP reports.

According to the news agency, concern has been mounting among European nations about ending up in the line of fire; as recently as this weekend, Russia urged diplomats and citizens from Western countries to leave.

But that will not happen, writes the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova.

"The EU delegation is staying. Threatening us will not stop support for Ukraine," she writes in a post on X.
