President Zelensky is a "gangster" and the Ukrainian government is "incredibly vicious."

The statements of the American top politician have aroused great anger.

- The congressman only expressed his displeasure, says Madison Cawthorn's spokesperson.

It was during a meeting in Asheville in the home state of North Carolina that the Republican member of the House of Representatives attacked the man who in recent weeks has become a hero for large parts of the world.

The statements made this weekend were published on Thursday by the local television station WRAL.

- Remember that Zelensky is a gangster. "Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt and incredibly evil," Cawthorn said in the video.

Both Democrats and Republicans reacted angrily when the statements became known on Thursday.

- It is only natural that the Republican Party under the leadership of Donald Trump, who praises Putin as "a genius" and "smart" at the same time as he launches an unprovoked and unjust war against the Ukrainian people, would develop to attack the democratically elected president of Ukraine who showed true heroism during Russian aggression, said Ammar Moussa, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, in a statement.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who backed tough sanctions against Russia, did his best to distance Cawthorn from the party during a news conference.

He called him a "deviant as much as possible on our side".

Voted against Russian oil ban

Madison Cawthorn was one of 15 Republicans in the House of Representatives who earlier this week voted against banning Russian oil imports to the United States.

Spokesman Luke Ball said the purpose of the statements was to "express displeasure with how foreign leaders, including Zelensky, are using false propaganda to drag the United States into a conflict in Europe."

"He does not want the United States to be drawn into another conflict through emotional manipulation," Ball said, according to the Washington Post.

On Thursday, Madison Cawthorn wrote a post on Twitter in which he sounded like an echo of Donald Trump - who claimed that Putin would never have dared to invade if he were still president.

"It should come as no shock to anyone that Putin was not afraid of Sleepy Joe," Cawthorn wrote.

The 26-year-old congressman has also not previously shyed away from controversial statements. He has called Joe Biden "mentally unstable" and questioned whether the president would go to Congress.

He has also called the United States' leading infection control expert Anthony Fauci a Chinese puppet.
