Early this morning, Russia bombed a military facility in Javoriv, 2.5 km from the Polish border.
35 people have been killed and 134 injured, Lviv's governor said in a statement.
"This is a new terrorist attack," said Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
On Sunday morning, aircraft alarms sounded in almost all Ukrainian regions and just before 5 o'clock there were reports of several explosions near the Lviv region.
Local authorities have now confirmed that 30 Russian rockets were sent to a military training facility in Javoriv, 2.5 km from the Polish border. A center for international peacekeeping and security must have been set up. 35 people have been killed and 134 injured, Lviv's governor said in a statement, reports the BBC.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov condemns the attack.
"This is a new terrorist attack on peace and security near the EU and NATO border. Measures must be taken to stop this. Close the airspace," he wrote on Twitter.
A signal to the outside world
The training facility is usually used for international exercises and as recently as February, the United States visited. Between 2015 and 2019, Canada led a training effort on the base, which went by the name "Operation Unifier". Swedish military personnel were also on site and contributed to the work of training the Ukrainian soldiers.
Russia recently warned Western nations that military transport should be seen as a legitimate target, and Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi believes the attack on Javoriv is a signal to the outside world.
- In the first place, I think it is a military benefit. The Russians are worried about the supply of materiel and have already begun to strike at airports. But I also think the signal value has been considered, he says and continues:
"Touches on all tender points"
- Both that it is close to NATO and Poland's border, and that they have conducted "Operation Unifier" at the base. It is also far enough from Poland to be sure not to miss. I think that the Russian side is trying to press all the sore points it has.
Paasikivi is worried that airstrikes on Ukraine's western cities have intensified. Lviv, Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk, previously protected, have all been bombed.
- It affects the supply of materials, but it is also the same roads that the refugee transports go on, he says.
