Experten: Ryssland attackerar Kiev i helgen

Överstelöjtnant Joakim Paasikivi oroas över utvecklingen och tror att huvudstaden Kiev står näst på tur.
– Jag tror de gör det i helgen, säger han.
Under fredagsmorgonen bombade Ryssland flera ukrainska städer som hittills varit fredade. I de västra delarna av landet har Lutsk och Ivano-Frankivsk attackerats med raketer, precis som Dnipro i sydöst.
Överstelöjtnant Joakim Paasikivi uppmärksammar nu att det ryska flygvapnet är mer aktiva än det varit tidigare.
– Det är oroväckande. Flygvapnet har varit en saknad för de ryska styrkorna, men det är oroande om de börjar sätta in dem nu. Det kommer att försvåra för de ukrainska styrkorna, men det kommer inte att förstöra, säger han.
Innebär de nya attackerna att de ukrainska försvararna bryts ner snabbare?
– Inte nödvändigtvis. För att få effekt militärt måste man skära av vapen och förnödenheter och det tror jag man har svårt att göra. Det är demoraliserande för civilbefolkning, men jag tror inte det påverkar motståndsviljan hos de försvarande ukrainarna. Det innebär bara att fler städer som hittills varit fredade påverkas.
”Svårförutsagt vad ryssarna ska göra”
Enligt Paasikivi finns det flera skäl till att Ryssland gått till attack mot de tre städerna.
– I Lutsk och Ivano-Frankivsk har man slagit till mot två flygplatser och jag tror att det finns två huvudskäl: Dels säkerställa att man inte kan få in de nya mig-planen som skulle doneras (från Polen) och dels att man vill stoppa hjälpsändningar, säger han och fortsätter:
– I Dnipro är det lite mer logiska raketanfall för markframryckning. Samtidigt breder trupperna ut sig mot Odessa och Transnistrien för att knyta ihop Svarta havskusten. Det som är mer svårförutsagt är vad ryssarna ska göra med Ukraina som helhet.
Kraftsamlar för attack
Paasikivi tror inte att Ryssland kommer att gå in med marktrupper i de västra delarna av Ukraina då det skulle kräva för stora resurser. Han tror i stället att man kraftsamlar för en nära förestående attack mot huvudstaden Kiev.
– Jag tror de gör det inom dagar, i helgen kanske. Kolonnen har kommit loss och förbandsenheterna har rört sig söderut. Jag tror att trupperna från nordöstra Ukraina knyter ihop med de som går från Belarus och sätter i gång ett anfall mot Kiev.

Russian forces are bombing more and more Ukrainian cities.

On Friday morning, Russia bombed several Ukrainian cities that have so far been protected. In the western parts of the country, Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk have been attacked with rockets, just like Dnipro in the southeast.
Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi now draws attention to the fact that the Russian Air Force is more active than before.
- It's worrying. The air force has been missing for the Russian forces, but it is worrying if they start deploying them now. It will make it difficult for the Ukrainian forces, but it will not destroy, he says.

Do the new attacks mean that the Ukrainian defenders will break down faster?
- Not necessarily. To have a military effect, you have to cut off weapons and supplies, and I think that is difficult to do. It is demoralizing for the civilian population, but I do not think it affects the will to resist of the defending Ukrainians. It only means that more cities that have been protected so far will be affected.
"Difficult to predict what the Russians will do"
According to Paasikivi, there are several reasons why Russia has attacked the three cities.
- In Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk, two airports have been attacked and I think there are two main reasons: Firstly to ensure that you can not get the new me planes that were to be donated (from Poland) and partly that you want to stop relief shipments , he says and continues:
- In Dnipro, there are a bit more logical rocket attacks for ground advance. At the same time, the troops are expanding towards Odessa and Transnistria to connect the Black Sea coast. What is more difficult to predict is what the Russians will do with Ukraine as a whole.

Gather forces for attack
Paasikivi does not believe that Russia will enter ground troops in the western parts of Ukraine as it would require too many resources. He believes instead that they are gathering strength for an imminent attack on the capital Kyiv.
- I think they will do it within days, this weekend maybe. The column has come loose and the unit has moved south. I believe that the troops from northeastern Ukraine are allied with those who are leaving Belarus and launching an attack on Kyiv.
