Belgian police have raided the EU Commission in search of evidence in an investigation into a large property sale.

The raid was carried out on Thursday on behalf of the EU's public prosecutor's office EPPO, writes Politico.

The EPPO confirms to the newspaper that it has collected evidence for an "ongoing investigation", but does not go into further details. That it concerns the sale of 23 Commission buildings to the Belgian state in 2024, is confirmed by a spokesperson for the Commission.

The spokesperson claims that the sale took place in accordance with applicable rules and says that he is confident that no violations have occurred. The EU Commission is cooperating fully with the investigation, according to the spokesperson.

Raids have reportedly taken place at several locations, including the Commission's budget department.
