Thousands of IS prisoners transferred from Syria to Iraq

More than 4,500 captured suspected IS members have been transferred from Syria to Iraq in the past month, an Iraqi official said. The transfer is being carried out by the US military.

In total, around 7,000 people may need to be transferred to secure the prisoners previously held by Kurdish-led forces in Syria.

The operation began in January, after Syrian government forces took control of areas previously controlled by the Kurdish-led forces SDF.

Among the prisoners are Syrians, Iraqis and Europeans.

Recently, Iraq's judiciary announced that investigations have been launched regarding prisoners taken from Syria.
