Trump: New Talks Underway – But Ceasefire Is Over
The United States has agreed to a request from Iran for new talks, Donald Trump writes on Truth Social. At the same time, he states that the ceasefire between the countries is over.
Trump does not provide further details about the alleged talks. Iran has not commented on the information.
On Friday, a delegation from the mediating country Qatar arrived in Tehran to try to pour oil on the waves, Iranian state media reports according to AFP.
Analysis: Trump may give up without taking the uranium
Once again, the United States is falling back on bombs and oil sanctions to try to subdue Iran, writes David E Sanger in the New York Times.
“The carrot is gone, the stick is back. But the administration has not answered why it believes that this combination of economic warfare and bombing will produce a different result this time.”
There are signs that Trump is getting ready to throw in the towel without having achieved one of his main goals: seizing Iran’s enriched uranium, writes Aaron Blake for CNN.
The administration has repeatedly called it an absolute must, he continues:
“But Trump has also floated the idea that it may not be entirely necessary, since the material is inaccessible to Iran and the areas can be monitored from space.”
Meanwhile, frustration among Iranians is growing over the absence of new leader Mojtaba Khamenei. That could be a problem for the regime, write Parisa Hafezi and Angus McDowall for Reuters.
“The Revolutionary Guards appear to have a firm grip on the country for now, but it is unclear how long the leader of a theocratic state can remain out of sight.”
Expert: The timing of the assassination plot is not surprising
The timing of the information about the Iranian assassination plot against Donald Trump is not surprising, says Middle East analyst Alexander Atarodi to TT.
He believes that Israel has in fact carefully chosen the occasion to present its intelligence information to Trump and the US. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the White House shortly, the first visit since the war in Iran broke out. The meeting is taking place at the same time as the already fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is on the verge of breaking.
– The agreement between the US and Iran is in a coma right now and we know that Israel wants to start a war again. It is in Israel's interest, says Alexander Atarodi.
