Nine people, both adults and children, have been shot at a water park in Michigan. Two of the injured are supposed to be four and eight years old.

The suspected perpetrator was surrounded in a house some distance from the park. Several hours later, the suspect was reportedly found dead.

The incident occurred shortly after 5pm on Saturday, local time. According to witnesses at the scene, both adults and children must have been injured.

Police shortly thereafter urged the public to "avoid the area and seek shelter," according to the Detroit News.

Two hours later, the police told media at the scene that there were five gunshot wounds.

By 06:30 on Sunday morning, the number had risen to nine people. A mother, 39, and her two children, ages four and eight, are among those shot, reports Fox 2 Detroit. The eight-year-old is said to have been hit in the head and is in a critical condition. The mother is also said to be seriously injured.

Six other gunshot victims, including three women and three men aged 30 to 78, are said to be in stable condition, according to CNN.

Fired 30 shots

The shooter allegedly got out of a car at a water playground in a park and started shooting at people. According to the police, the suspect must have fired at least 30 shots. The person is said to have fired with a handgun which was then reloaded twice with new magazines, which the police found at the scene.

- It seems very random. No connection to the victims, says police chief Michael Bouchard, reports BNO News.

The shooter is said to have then been found in a house a couple of kilometers from the water park, which a task force surrounded.

At eight o'clock local time, the police must have waited for a house search to be able to enter the house where the suspect is supposed to be, according to BNO News.

When police were unable to make contact with the suspected shooter, a drone was used, and when they finally entered the home, the person was found dead after taking his own life, the AP reports.

"So many tragedies"

The incident took place in Rochester Hills, which is located north of Detroit. The police must have been on the scene quickly after the alarm came in.

- One of our officers from Rochester Hills listened to a new technology that we have implemented called Live 911, and heard the call coming in, before it was routed to him, and immediately drove there and was on the scene within two minutes, says Officer Michael Bouchard on Fox 2 Detroit.

Three years ago, Rochester Hills was hit by a shooting in which a 15-year-old killed four high school students. Saturday's shooting is now called "a punch in the stomach".

- We have been through so many tragedies. We have barely taken in what happened in Oxford, and now we have another tragedy to deal with, says Michael Bouchard.
