Political situation in Germany

AFD politician shot in the jaw during police raid in Saxony

A local representative of the far-right German party AFD was shot in the jaw during a raid on a far-right group in the German state of Saxony earlier on Tuesday. This is reported by Der Spiegel.

AFD politician Kurt Hättasch allegedly confronted the police with a firearm, and then himself was shot in the face. He is said to have been taken to hospital and operated on, but not life-threateningly injured.

A total of 15 people were arrested. The far-right group is described by the police as a "neo-Nazi terror cell", and is said to have planned to take over parts of eastern Germany and carry out ethnic cleansing.

Planned to overthrow the government - eight arrested in Germany

On Tuesday, German police arrested eight people who are suspected of being members of a far-right militant organization in the federal state of Saxony, reports the AP news agency.

Among those arrested are minors and teenagers who are said to have been part of a group of between 15 and 20 people. Among other things, they allegedly shared racist and anti-Semitic posts, according to the prosecutor's office.

The prosecutors believe that the members were united in opposing the democratic order in Germany and claimed that the country was approaching "collapse".

The group is said to have planned to overthrow power in the federal state with the aim of establishing "structures inspired by Nazism".
