Trump can win a triple victory: "Every president's dream"
If the Republicans get a majority in Congress, it means a dream situation for Donald Trump.
- All presidents want a situation like this. This means you can get your agenda through, says Alex Lange, a political analyst who worked for the Democrats, to Aftonbladet.
The AP news agency has determined that the Republicans will get a majority in the Senate. How it will turn out in the House of Representatives is still not clear and the final result may take several days. So far, the Democrats have secured 180 seats against the Republicans' 198. It takes 218 to get a majority.
Merrick Tabor, political scientist at Stockholm University, tells Aftonbladet that Trump is prepared to "transform the entire system" if his party gets a full majority.
The Republicans take over the Senate
The Republicans pinch several important Senate seats from the Democrats, which means that the Republicans take over the Democrats' thin power in the Senate. AP confirms that.
In West Virginia and Ohio, respectively, Republicans Jim Justice and Bernie Moreno are defeating their Democratic rivals, according to NBC News and the AP. In his victory speech, Moreno directly addressed the Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, with the words "you're fired, buddy."
"This is a new dawn for Republican leadership," Moreno said.
The Democrats have held a narrow majority in the Senate, with 51 out of 100 seats. At 2 p.m., Swedish time, the Republicans have secured 52 seats, which means they have taken three seats so far from the Democrats.
It is the first time in four years that the Republicans have gained power in the Senate.
It is not yet clear what will happen in the House of Representatives.
"The house" is the Democrats' last hope - but even
The Democrats' last hope rests in the House of Representatives, writes The Hill. This since the party appears to have lost both the Senate and the presidency. Now the party follows the vote count district by district in the hope of taking power in at least the House of Representatives.
So far, Democrats have secured 176 seats compared to Republicans' 195, but if Democrats win the expected remaining districts, and where Republicans now hold the lead, that would be enough for the narrowest possible victory. But several elections are extremely even and it could take weeks before there is a result, the newspaper writes.
Democrat Gerry Connolly, who won a seat in Virginia by a landslide, says he is neither optimistic nor pessimistic about the Democrats' chances - as both parties have possible paths to victory.
- I am in a state of anxiety and anticipation. There is no wave sweeping across the House of Representatives, instead it is a battle that unfolds district by district, he says.
