The election in the United States

Polling stations open in the US - arming themselves with drones and snipers in Arizona

Now the polling stations are opening their doors on the east coast of the United States. At the same time, there are concerns about security in several states, Reuters reports.

In several places, security has been tightened and the National Guard is ready to move in in the event of any unrest.

In the wave master state of Arizona, local police have prepared with drones and snipers.

- We will have a lot of resources out there, a lot of personnel, a lot of equipment, says local police chief Russ Skinner to the news agency.

In Washington DC, the security burden is enormous, writes NPR. High fences have been erected around the White House. Several shops are closed and shop windows have been covered due to the risk of riots.

Republicans historically strong in early voting

Republicans unexpectedly take the lead in early voting in two-thirds of the states. At least in terms of the number of registered voters, reports The Telegraph.

The numbers apply to states that require voter registration. It is the first time since at least 2008 that Republicans are so strong in early voting, which is otherwise dominated by Democratic voters.

37.9 percent of early voters nationally are registered Democrats while 36 percent are registered Republicans. In the last election, only 30.5 percent of early voters were registered Republicans.

The Democrats' lead nationally is the smallest that has been measured so far and shows, according to The Telegraph, a shift where the Republicans have become stronger in early voting.

In addition, the Republicans lead in terms of registered voters in several important states such as Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Iowa.

Political scientist: Divided country no matter who wins

Will Donald Trump or Kamala Harris be the next President of the United States? No matter who wins, America will be divided. Jennifer McCoy, professor of political science at Georgia State University, tells TT.

- The loser's reaction determines whether the polarization worsens or even degenerates and becomes violent, she says.

SVT's USA bureau has spoken with political science professor Robert Pape, one of the USA's most experienced researchers on political extremism. He believes that the "legitimacy crisis" facing the American election is greater this year than in the 2020 election.

If Trump doesn't immediately emerge as the winner, he can once again claim that the election was stolen, and this time he's speaking to an audience that's already open to it, Pape points out.

- I call this the era of violent populism in the United States.

Analysis: "Measly measurement errors can lead to landslide victory tomorrow"

A super even election result has almost become a reality already in advance. But in fact, it is entirely possible that either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will win the necessary number of electoral votes by a good margin. That's what Lenny Bronner writes in an analysis in the Washington Post.

Bronner points out that the differences in the wave master states are within the margin of error.

"This means that we should be prepared for all these states to go in a different direction than what the opinion polls show now," he writes.

Sara Dorn at Forbes is on the same track. A "tiny measurement error today can be a landslide victory tomorrow", writes Dorn.

"There is a possibility that pollsters are overcompensating to compensate for the assumption that Trump's supporters are underrepresented."

The state of public opinion
Betting sites point to Trump - Predictit swings

Four betting platforms now point to a victory for Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election, notes the Wall Street Journal.

PredictIt, which previously had Kamala Harris as the favorite, has now swung in Trump's favor.

Kalshi, Plymarket and Smarkets also give the former president a chance of between 57 and 61.5 percent to win the election.

According to the opinion polls, it is still a dead race.
