Quick version
- Donald Trump has been declared the next president of the United States according to Fox News, after securing enough electoral votes by winning crucial swing states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
- Kamala Harris had hoped for victory by winning the three states in the "blue wall": Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, but they instead went to Trump, which meant that Harris did not reach the 270 electoral votes required.
- Donald Trump gave his victory speech at an election vigil in Florida, where he thanked his supporters and his wife Melania, and expressed that he wants to help the country heal and fix, among other things, border security.
The next president of the United States is called Donald Trump, according to Fox News.
- Look what happened, isn't this crazy? he says himself in his victory speech.
Already early on when the vote counting began, it looked good for Donald Trump in all of the seven wave master states that were identified as decisive before the election.
First of the seven to go to Trump was North Carolina. Shortly after 06:30, CNN reported that Trump won in Georgia as well.
When Fox News just before 8 o'clock awarded him the victory in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as well, it was clear:
Donald Trump had secured enough electoral votes to become the next president of the United States.
Harry's last hope
Kamala Harris's last hope to win lay in the three states in the "blue wall": Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The combined 44 electoral votes of the three states would likely have been enough to take her to exactly the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election.
"We have known all along that our clearest path to 270 electoral votes is through the blue wall. And what we're seeing feels good,” Harris campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon wrote in a message to her staff Wednesday morning.
Now the entire "blue wall" instead looks like it will turn red - and go to Donald Trump.
He thus becomes the 47th president of the United States.
Fox News is so far the only major American television channel to declare Trump the winner. At 8:06 a.m., CNN declared Trump the winner in Pennsylvania, which, according to the channel's calculation, would give Trump 265 of the 270 electoral votes needed.
The vote count is still ongoing, but Trump is leading in all of the remaining swing states.
Expected with Elon Musk
Donald Trump himself has spent election night on his own, smaller vigil at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. With him were, among others, Tesla billionaire Elon Musk, UFC boss Dana White, Tom Emmer, whip in Congress and investor Steve Witkoff, one of Trump's old friends.
Ten minutes by car from Mar-a-Lago, a major election vigil is held at the Palm Beach convention center.
There, Donald Trump grabbed the microphone at 08:27 (02:27 local time) for a victory speech.
- I want to thank our friends. We have thousands of friends in this incredible movement, he said.
- We must help our country heal. We have a country that needs help, that really needs help. We will fix the border and everything else.
He also took the opportunity to thank his wife, Melania, who joined him on stage after being absent for much of the campaign.
- She works hard to help people, I want to thank her, Trump said after kissing his wife on the cheek.
