Greenland crisis US threats
Expert on Trump's ship: "Ridiculous and desperate"
Donald Trump's proposal to send a hospital ship that is usually used in war zones to Greenland is ridiculous, and shows how limited his knowledge of Europe is. This is what US expert Jan Hallenberg tells DN.
The ship, USNS Mercy, is still moored in Alabama. According to Hallenberg, it is unlikely to move anywhere.
- Trump is desperately looking for attempts to get Greenlanders to be positive about becoming part of the US. But I can't see that this will exactly contribute to that, he says.
DR's Lasse Lindegaard has taken to the streets of Nuuk to hear what Greenlanders have to say about the whole thing.
- People laugh a little and call it silly, and some ask: "What are we going to do with it?" he says.
Details: Russian missiles on their way to Iran
Iran has signed a deal with Russia to buy hand-held anti-aircraft missiles, reports the British business newspaper Financial Times, citing leaked Russian documents.
The deal, signed in Moscow last December, is worth 495 million euros, equivalent to around 5.3 billion kronor, and consists of 500 Verba launchers and 2,500 anti-aircraft missiles, writes the FT.
Verba is one of Russia's most modern air defense systems, and can hit cruise missiles, low-flying aircraft and drones. It allows smaller, mobile groups of soldiers to quickly establish defensive positions.
The revelation comes at a time when the US is mobilizing militarily in the region to pressure Iran to agree to a nuclear energy deal.
Middle East Crisis Political situation in Israel
US ambassador condemned after statement on Israel
Several countries in the Middle East have released a joint statement condemning US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, reports The Guardian.
The background is Huckabee's participation in right-wing profile Tucker Carlson's podcast, where he said that it would be okay for Israel to take large parts of the region. In the podcast, Carlson pressed Huckabee on the meaning of a Bible verse that is sometimes interpreted as Israel having the right to land between the Nile in Egypt and the Euphrates in Syria and Iraq.
- It would be okay if they took everything, Huckabee replied, but added that it is not something that Israel has asked for.
On Sunday, a dozen governments and organizations, including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, issued a joint statement condemning the statement as "provocative and dangerous."
Israeli Speaker Amir Ohana came to Huckabee's defense, praising his pro-Israel stance and instead accusing Tucker Carlson of "falsehoods and manipulation."
