US Ambassador Praises Operation Against “El Mencho”

The US ambassador to Mexico is praising the military operation that killed cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes on Sunday, CNN reports.

“I express my respect and solidarity with the Mexican officials and security forces who confront these criminal elements every day, often at great personal risk,” writes Ronald Johnson.

“El Mencho” was the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, which according to Johnson has been designated by the US as a narco-terrorist organization and responsible for smuggling fentanyl into the US.

The killing of “El Mencho” has led to widespread unrest in several states in Mexico, where cars and houses have been set on fire and roads blocked. Several countries, including Sweden, have urged their citizens to follow the instructions of the authorities.

Embassy warns Swedes after unrest

The Swedish embassy in Mexico issued a warning yesterday following unrest in the state of Jalisco following the death of cartel leader “El Mencho”. However, the warning applies to several places in the country, including the tourist resorts of Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

“Follow the instructions of local authorities and avoid crowds. The situation can change quickly,” the embassy writes on Sweden Abroad.

Embassies of other countries have also issued warnings to their citizens, including the USA, Canada, Germany and Denmark.
