Political situation in Hungary
Orbán: EU is the big threat – not Russia
The EU, not Russia, is the biggest threat to Hungary. That is the message of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in his annual address to the nation, two months before an election that he currently looks set to lose to his pro-EU rival Péter Magyar.
Anyone who loves freedom should fear Brussels rather than Moscow, says Orbán, continuing:
“The scaremongering about Putin is primitive and frivolous. Brussels, on the other hand, is a tangible reality and an immediate danger.”
According to the latest opinion polls, Péter Magyar’s two-year-old opposition party Tisza has just under 50 percent of the vote. Orbán and his Fidesz, which has been in power since 2010, have around 40 percent.
Middle East crisis Iran-US relations
Sources: US expects prolonged operation in Iran
US forces are preparing for a prolonged, several-week operation in Iran if President Donald Trump decides to attack. This is reported by two sources to Reuters. The situation is considered to be significantly more serious than previous conflicts between the countries.
The US announced yesterday that another aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, is being sent to the region. Negotiations between the countries began this week in Oman on Iran's nuclear weapons program. However, in a speech to US soldiers on Friday, Trump said that it had "been difficult" to reach an agreement with Iran.
A potential attack could be directed at facilities belonging to the state and various authorities, not just nuclear facilities. The source also states that the US fully expects Iran to retaliate.
Trump's USA Climate Policy
Trump's climate moves could lead to more illnesses and lawsuits
Yesterday, Donald Trump revoked a landmark decision from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which means that the government no longer has the right to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. The BBC has listed a number of potential consequences.
One of Trump's strongest arguments was cheaper cars - that could very well happen, but at the same time they will be much harder to export due to other countries' climate regulations.
Americans are also at risk of getting sicker - over the next 30 years, increased emissions could lead to tens of thousands of premature births, tens of thousands more hospital visits and tens of millions more asthma attacks, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.
As responsibility for regulating emissions is transferred from the government to the courts, they also risk being inundated with civil lawsuits over emissions in the public domain, according to the BBC.
