Portugal's presidential election has begun – amid raging storm
More than eleven million Portuguese people are going to the polls today, amid a storm that has displaced thousands and killed two people. Several municipalities have postponed the election for a few days due to the weather.
This is the second round of the presidential election. It is between António José Seguro, former leader of the social democratic Socialist Party, and the far-right candidate André Ventura, who leads the Chega party.
In the first round, which took place on January 19, Seguro won with 31 percent of the vote to Ventura's 23.5. Seguro is also expected to win the election today.
The role of president in Portugal is largely ceremonial. The country's prime minister since April 2024 is Luís Montenegro, party leader of the liberal conservative PSD.
