Macron: French UN soldier killed in Lebanon
A French UN soldier has been killed in Lebanon.
Hezbollah is said to be behind the attack, according to President Emmanuel Macron.
The ceasefire in Lebanon is in its third day.
But this morning, the UN peacekeeping forces UNIFIL were attacked in the southern parts of the country.
French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin says the soldiers were ambushed while clearing a path to a UNIFIL military base. French UN soldier Florian Montorio has been killed, says French President Emmanuel Macron.
“Three of his brothers-in-arms are injured and have been evacuated. The nation bows in respect and extends its support to the families, to our soldiers and to all our military personnel who are committed to peace in Lebanon,” Macron writes on X.
According to the president, Hezbollah is behind the attack.
“France calls on the Lebanese authorities to immediately arrest the perpetrators and take responsibility alongside UNIFIL,” he writes.
Hezbollah denies the allegations.
The Lebanese army says it is investigating the incident together with the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL.
Israel: Yellow Line established
At the same time, the Israeli military, the IDF, says it has carried out attacks in southern Lebanon, including against infrastructure.
A ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect on Thursday evening, but Israel says “terrorists” have violated it by being near the “line.”
It is the first time since the ceasefire came into effect that the IDF has referred to such a line in Lebanon, according to TT.
– The model of the ‘yellow line’ from Gaza will be copied to Lebanon, and the IDF has already defined a ‘yellow line’ up to which IDF forces are currently operating, senior IDF officials say, according to CNN.
An official states that there are 55 Lebanese villages in the area and that Lebanese residents will not be allowed there.
– The IDF has permission to continue destroying terrorist infrastructure there even during the ceasefire, they added.
The area is to demarcate an area in southern Lebanon where Israeli forces are conducting a ground invasion.
On Friday, Donald Trump lashed out at Israel and wrote on Truth Social that “Israel will no longer bomb Lebanon”.
“They are FORBIDDEN from doing so by the US. Enough is enough!!”, he wrote.
