Trump's USA  Trump's quarrel with the Pope
Catholic voters divided over Trump's papal quarrel

The latest week's outburst against Pope Leo is dividing Catholic Trump voters, writes the Wall Street Journal.

63-year-old Catholic Letitia Velasquez has voted for Trump in every presidential election, but the Jesus-like AI portrait of Trump has made her change her mind. She says she no longer supports Trump and does not believe the president's explanation that he depicted a doctor, rather than Jesus.

- Nice try, Trump.

Other Catholic Trump supporters do not seem to care much about the president's papal speech. 65-year-old Phil Liquori does not think the pope should get involved in politics. He interprets Trump's AI post more as satire.

- Everyone seems to love to hate Trump, he tells WSJ.

Earlier this week, the New York Times and Axios reported that Trump's spat with the Pope risks creating problems for the Republicans ahead of the mid-term elections. The party depends on Catholic votes to maintain its majority in Congress.

EU countries may be forced to share their jet fuel stocks

The EU is ready to introduce requirements for jet fuel to be shared between member states to alleviate the fuel crisis threatening the airline industry this summer, reports the Financial Times.

The fuel crisis triggered by the Iran war has so far mainly been about high prices, but it will soon turn into an acute shortage, according to Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen.

- It will first and foremost affect jet fuel. We are approaching this very quickly, he says.

Yesterday, the international energy agency IEA stated that Europe has around six weeks of jet fuel left, and European airlines have already started to cancel flights due to the expected shortage.

The king is in Ukraine - as the first monarch during the war

Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf is in Ukraine. It is his first visit to Ukraine since the start of the war in 2022 and the first time a monarch has visited the country during the war, according to the Swedish government.

- It is further proof of Sweden's broad and unwavering support, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) in a press release.

The Foreign Minister and a team from SVT are also on the trip.

During the visit, the king will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyj, participate in a memorial ceremony in Lviv, and visit schools and hospitals, TT and SVT News write.

Trump's USA  ICE operations

ICE chief resigns – unclear who will take over

Todd Lyons will leave his role as head of the US immigration police ICE. This is reported by several American media. The resignation was submitted on Thursday to Markwayne Mullin, who took over the role from the former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

The reason is that he wants to spend more time with his family, writes The New York Times.

Lyons took over as acting chief in March 2025 and has had a turbulent year since then. Above all, he has received a lot of criticism for his tough stance on immigration and for ICE's working methods. Something that led to the protests in Minnesota in particular, where two people were shot to death.

May 31 will be his last day of work. It is unclear who will take over the role.
