Saving lives in focus as the fire on Tenerife spreads
More than 26,000 islanders have been evacuated from their homes on Tenerife in the worst forest fire in the Canary Islands so far, the news agencies write.
When the winds picked up Saturday night, the blaze gained momentum and at least five communities had to be flash evacuated, according to Social Affairs Minister Candelaria Delgado.
- Our focus is to save lives, says Rosa Dávila, chairman of the island's political assembly.
The fire that broke out on Wednesday has now grown to 5,000 hectares and is still out of control.
A total of 11 municipalities on the island are affected.

Ecowas in talks with the junta in Niger - met Bazoum
Representatives from the West African cooperation organization Ecowas met with representatives from the military junta in Niger on Saturday, according to AFP.
In connection with the meeting, they also had the opportunity to meet the deposed, popularly elected president Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since the military coup.
Ecowas has previously given the military junta an ultimatum – to surrender and release Bazoum or risk military intervention. There is also stated to be a deadline for when this should be completed.
On Saturday, a representative of the military junta said it could consider a three-year transition period to a new popularly elected leader.
- Our ambition is not to seize power, said General Abdourahamed Tiani, in a televised speech
