Libyan minister fired after secret Israeli meeting
Libya's foreign minister Najla al-Mangoush has been fired, according to sources to Al Jazeera. This after Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen announced that he met al-Mangoush secretly in Rome.
The incident has led to large protests in Libya and other countries in the Middle East. Libya does not recognize Israel and has historically stood clearly on the side of the Palestinians, writes the BBC. According to the New York Times, al-Mangoush has fled to Turkey out of fear for his safety.
Najla al-Mangoush was rumored to have left the country with the help of Libya's security services, which they denied. The security service announced instead that she was on the list of people stopped from leaving the country.
The Israelis also criticize the unannounced ministerial meeting. Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Cohen's behavior caused countries to doubt whether Israel is a suitable foreign policy partner.
