Absent Trump wants to steal the show tonight: "He's already won the debate"
Tonight, the Republicans hold the first primary debate before the election in November next year. Eight candidates fight - starting at 03 Swedish time - to take a place in the spotlight in Donald Trump's absence.
The ex-president announced this weekend that he will not run, citing his large advantage in opinion polls.
- President Trump has already won the debate, because everything will be about him, adviser Chris LaCivita told AFP.
He questions that it is even called a debate.
- It is rather an audition to become part of President Trump's team during his second term, LaCivita continues.
Instead, a pre-recorded interview with conservative voice and former Fox News star Tucker Carlson will be posted online as the debate takes place.
“It will fly sparks. Here you go!" Trump hinted in all caps on Truth Social.
The debate and interview take place just one day before the former president is expected to turn himself in to Georgia authorities in the ongoing 2020 election meddling case, something experts say also takes the focus away from the other candidates.

The charges against Trump
Giuliani has turned himself in to authorities
The former New York mayor and ex-president Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani has surrendered to authorities in Atlanta, Georgia, several US media reports. The case concerns the accusations that he participated in the attempts to influence the election in the state.
Giuliani was indicted last week along with Trump and 17 others. Bail is set at 150,000 dollars, equivalent to roughly 1.6 million
