Researchers: "Bolsonaro was a Brazilian El Niño"
Jair Bolsonaro's first two years as president of Brazil were as damaging to the Amazon rainforest as the weather phenomenon El Niño and the record drought of 2016, according to a new study published in the scientific journal Nature, writes The Guardian.
The researchers have studied annual carbon dioxide emissions from the rainforest and found that they doubled between 2019 and 2020, compared to the average between 2010 and 2018. According to the study, this happened as a result of the Amazon being deliberately cleared and burned for cattle ranching and agriculture during Bolsonaro's first year at the power.
Bolsonaro was a Brazilian El Niño, says Luciana Gatti, who led the study.
- It is a fantastic and very sad story, she says.

Police arrest election observers in Zimbabwe
Police in Zimbabwe have confirmed that they arrested 39 election observers on Wednesday evening, AFP reports. They allegedly tried to disrupt the voting process.
- The police confiscated the mobile phones and computers of the election observers when they carried out the raids in the capital Harare and around the country, confirms the police spokesperson Paul Nyathi on state television.
Due to the unrest that arose in connection with the election process, the electoral authority has extended the voting until Thursday evening. Among other things, it will be about ballot papers being delayed, something the opposition denies. They believe that there are signs that the election is rigged.
- This is a way to make voters in Harare frustrated. A way to manipulate the election results, said voter Tafadzwa Dhlodhlo at the Warren Park polling station to AFP.
