Analysis: A Houdini trick is the rivals' only option
Donald Trump's challenger to become the Republican presidential candidate faces a gigantic challenge, writes CNN's Harry Enten in an analysis after the week's first Republican debate.
According to Enten's review, Trump critic Chris Christie has the lowest approval rating of any Republican presidential candidate since at least 1980. The disastrous rating proves that the tactic of attacking Trump is not working, which also explains why many of the candidates are instead praising him.
"This creates a conundrum for Trump's rivals that even Harry Houdini would struggle to solve: how to tap into Trump's support without looking like you're trying to undercut him."
In The Guardian, Joan E Greve looks back on the past week - and states that Trump has a unique ability to "suck up all available media oxygen".

Analysis: The summer idyll comes to an abrupt end for Biden
Like many presidents before him, Biden spent much of August far away from the White House. He rode his bike, went to the movies and spent time with the grandchildren at the house the family rented at Lake Tahoe.
But once back in reality in Washington, Biden will be faced with several difficult challenges, writes CNN's Kevin Liptak.
The president has said he is "concerned" by the threat of a strike by carmakers who want better wages and guarantees that the transition to electric vehicles will not harm their careers. Other challenges will be the battle in Congress over the costly aid to Ukraine, as well as the handling of the fires on Maui.
Even challenger Donald Trump has, to say the least, something to stand for during the fall, with two impeachment hearings and four indictments, writes The Guardian's Chris McGreal. His "mugshot" is the first ever by a former US president, but whether it will make him a mobster or a rock star remains to be seen, writes McGreal.
"The image is not flattering but it conveys the message many of Trump's supporters want to hear - warfare."
