The 2024 US election
Old and confused – or corrupt and dishonest?
US President Joe Biden is "old" and "confused" and former president Donald Trump "corrupt" and "dishonest". That picture emerges in AP's survey where Americans get to choose which words they want to use to describe the politicians.
Biden is only three years older than Trump, but many Americans, including Democrats, are genuinely concerned about the sitting president's age, the news agency writes.
Overall, 62 percent of Americans say they have negative views of Trump, while 52 percent say the same about Biden.

Analysis: Trump's calendar headed for utter chaos
The legal processes mean that Donald Trump's calendar looks like it will be "purely chaotic" after the turn of the year, writes the BBC's Anthony Zurcher in an analysis.
As early as January, trials begin to be crowded with important agenda items on the Republican election agenda. A defamation suit against Trump, linked to author E Jean Carroll, is to be filed on the same day Iowa Republicans are to choose a presidential candidate.
On March 4, the trial that deals with Trump's alleged attempt to overturn the election results will begin. It is the day before the so-called Super Tuesday, when a large part of the United States chooses a candidate before the election. The examples are two of many.
Politico's Kyle Cheney writes that Trump's path back to the White House is lined with trial dates. Between now and midway through 2024, Trump faces a "near-constant line of trials that overlap, and perhaps overshadow, the primary election calendar."

Heavy trial against Trump in March 2024 - in the middle of a heated election campaign
The trial on whether Donald Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election results begins on March 4, 2024, AP writes. The federal indictment has been described as one of the most serious legal cases against the former president.
- The public has the right to a quick and efficient solution to the issue, says judge Tanya Chutkan.
The trial will therefore take place in the midst of a heated election campaign.
A trial start in March is later than the special prosecutor Jack Smith wanted, but earlier than Trump's lawyers argued for. The defense wanted the trial to be held in April 2026, more than a year after the next president was installed in the White House.
Trump has four charges against him. In a separate federal indictment, Smith's team accuses Trump of illegally handling classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. He is also facing state charges in Georgia and New York.
