The elections in Guatemala
Corruption and inflation in focus during the elections in Guatemala
Guatemala's residents will elect a new president on Sunday - and the hope among voters is that the country's next leader will tackle the inflation, crime and corruption that the country is grappling with, reports Reuters.
According to polls, it is Bernardo Arevalo who appears to be the winner. He has gone to the polls with an anti-corruption message and progressive politics. Arevalo's opponent is the country's former first lady Sandra Torres.
The international community will be watching the election closely. During the election campaign, there have been several attempts to remove Arevalo and his party.
Outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei has promised to hand over power in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The concern: The election in Guatemala could be ugly and unsafe
Election observers from the EU express concern that the elections in Guatemala will not go smoothly, reports Prensa Libre. The observer Jordi Cañas tells the newspaper that it may happen that late on election night you will not have a "result that reflects the will of the citizens of Guatemala".
But he hopes that the election will still go smoothly and that the aftermath will be about the fact that it was held in a "peaceful and democratic" way.
Presidential candidate Sandra Torres' party, UNE, has come forward with allegations of electoral influence, but Cañas chooses not to comment on these allegations at this time. At the same time, he guarantees that he and all other election observers will do everything they can to ensure that the election is transparent and fair.
