Middle East Crisis Ceasefire

Major protests in Israel: “Enough with the destruction”

Several thousand protesters have gathered in Jerusalem and are heading towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence. Several media outlets are reporting this.

The protesters are protesting against Netanyahu’s plan to fire Ronen Bar, who heads the country’s internal security service, and against Israel’s renewed attacks on Gaza.

The Times of Israel reports that the protesters are carrying placards that read “enough with the destruction of the government.” According to TT, it is the largest protest in Jerusalem in months.

On Tuesday evening, over 40,000 protesters gathered in Tel Aviv, calling on Netanyahu to resign.

“It is time for you to ask for forgiveness, step aside and make way for a more dignified leader,” Netanyahu’s former party colleague Rafi Ben Shitrit said from the podium, according to Haaretz.

Hamas: Still open to ceasefire

Hamas is still open to talks on a ceasefire, AFP reports.

During the night of Tuesday, Israel carried out its most extensive attack on Gaza since the ceasefire came into effect in January. More than 400 people are said to have been killed. Hamas said at the time that Israel had “unilaterally ended the ceasefire”. But now a spokesman for the terror group says that “the door is not closed” for new talks.

– We have no conditions, but we demand that the occupying power immediately stop its aggression and war of annihilation, and begin the second phase of the negotiations, spokesman Taher al-Nunu told the news agency.

The second phase of the ceasefire was to come into effect in early March. According to the agreement, Israeli forces would then leave Gaza.
