China has executed four Canadians - condemned
China has executed four Canadian citizens convicted of drug crimes, several media outlets report.
All four had dual citizenship. The executions are met with sharp condemnation from the Canadian government.
- We strongly condemn the executions that have been carried out against Canadians in China, says Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, according to Reuters.
Joly is appealing to China to spare the life of another Canadian citizen who was sentenced to death in China for drug trafficking in 2019, and who has not yet been executed.
China has strict penalties for drug crimes and says it acted “in accordance with the law.”
Violence in Congo-Kinshasa
Rebels take new city in Congo-Kinshasa
The Rwandan-backed rebel group M23 has entered the important city of Walikale in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, reports the AP.
By taking control of the mineral-rich city, the group has now also taken over a key road that cuts off the Congolese military’s position.
“Our military is no longer fighting. It’s as if we are being sacrificed,” activist Fiston Misona told the AP.
The escalation comes just a day after the presidents of Rwanda and Congo-Kinshasa met in Qatar to discuss a ceasefire. The long-running historical conflict between the Rwandan-backed M23 and Congo-Kinshasa gained new momentum in late January when the M23 took over the cities of Goma and Bukavu. Nearly three thousand people have been killed since then.
