Political situation in Turkey

Turkish protesters met with tear gas and rubber bullets

Turkish riot police have fired rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters outside Istanbul City Hall, AFP correspondents on the spot reported.

Thousands of protesters are protesting the arrest of the city's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu shortly before he was expected to be named the opposition's presidential candidate. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan banned demonstrations shortly after the announcement, but thousands of people are defying the ban.

Imamoglu was arrested after charges of corruption and support for a terror group, charges that protesters say are arbitrary and undemocratic.

37 arrested in Turkey for "provocative" posts

37 people have been arrested in Turkey on charges of "provocative" posts on social media related to the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Reuters reports, citing the Turkish government.

Turkey's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya says that 261 social media accounts have been identified that incite "hate and crime".

Last night, thousands of people gathered to protest the detention of Imamoglu, which comes just days before his party CHP was expected to nominate him as its presidential candidate for the next election.

Imamoglu is seen as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival.

Analysis: Erdogan's actions are reminiscent of Putin

The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on suspicion of corruption and terrorism is reminiscent of Putin's Russia, writes SvD's Jesper Sundén in an analysis.

Imamoglu is very popular and has won the mayoralty from Erdogan's AKP party. He denies the charges for which Imamoglu was arrested, many believe that it is all about neutralizing Erdogan's challenger, writes Sundén.

“Much like Russian President Putin had the popular opposition leader Alexei Navalny imprisoned, before he was murdered in prison,” he continues.

DN's Nathan Shachar is on the same track. Turkey also chose a good opportunity to strike – due to the international situation. Donald Trump will not punish Erdogan and the EU needs Turkey in the intensified Ukraine crisis, Shachar writes in an analysis.

“The question, however, is whether Erdogan will allow any serious opponent to run in 2028,” he continues.
