Middle East Crisis Victims in Gaza

Five UNRWA staff killed in Gaza

In recent days, five staff members from the UN relief agency for Palestine refugees, Unrwa, have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza. This is what Unrwa's head Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X.

This brings the total number of Unrwa staff killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to 284.

Lazzarini writes in his post that Israel is continuing its attacks from the sea and air.

"We fear that the worst is yet to come, given the ongoing ground invasion that separates the north from the south."

On Wednesday, a UN employee was killed and five were seriously injured in an attack on their premises in Gaza.

On Thursday, Gaza's Hamas-controlled Civil Defense said that over 500 Palestinians had been killed since Israel resumed its attacks on Tuesday.

Nearly 200 children among those killed in Israeli attacks

Since Israel resumed its attacks on Gaza overnight on Tuesday, 504 Palestinians have been killed, Gaza's Hamas-controlled Civil Defense said, according to AFP.

The Guardian writes that the death toll is expected to rise because the number of injured is so high and bodies are still buried under the rubble.

Many civilians are among the dead. Hamas-controlled authorities say 183 children are among the more than 400 killed in the attacks overnight on Tuesday.

The death toll from Gaza has been difficult to verify for international media. But the UN and other bodies have previously considered Gaza health authorities' statistics to be reliable. The Israeli military has in turn questioned their statistics.

On Wednesday, several media outlets, including Omni, incorrectly reported that 970 people had been killed in Gaza in 48 hours. That figure was later downgraded.

Karam's three sons killed in Israeli attacks: "They wanted to be doctors and teachers"

A large proportion of the victims of the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza are children. The BBC has spoken to Karam Tafeek Hameid, who lost his three sons - nine, eight and five years old.

- They used to play, have fun, and above all they loved to ride with me in my tuktuk. They wanted to be doctors and teachers, says Karam Tafeek Hameid.

The BBC has spoken to Irish trauma surgeon Morgan McMonagle, who volunteers at Nasser Hospital in Gaza. He estimates that around 40 percent of the dead and injured he encountered after Tuesday's attacks were children.

- There is a disproportionately large proportion of children and women who are injured and killed. I think any reasonable person can see that it is disproportionate.
