Argentina wants Maduro extradited from the US

Argentina on Wednesday requested the extradition of Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro from the US.

According to legal documents, Argentina wants to hold Maduro accountable for crimes against humanity. The court has invoked the principle of universal jurisdiction.

Maduro was detained by the US in connection with a military raid into the Venezuelan capital Caracas on January 3. He was taken out of the country and on to New York.

Argentine prosecutors accuse Maduro and also Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello of having staged a systematic plan to oppress, torture, murder and persecute the population since 2014.

Maduro is suspected in the United States of crimes related to drug trafficking.
