Russia and US without nuclear arms treaty for first time in over 50 years

Russia is no longer bound by the so-called “New Start” disarmament treaty with the US, the Russian Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement according to AFP.

The agreement, which limits the number of nuclear warheads to 1,550 per country, expires on Thursday. Then Russia, the former Soviet Union, and the US will be without a disarmament treaty for the first time in over half a century.

“The Russian Federation intends to act responsibly and sensibly,” the Russian Foreign Ministry wrote, but added that the country is ready to act “resolutely” if national security is threatened.

According to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin offered last fall to extend the treaty for a year, but no formal response came from Washington.

Donald Trump said at the time that it sounded like a good idea, but no negotiations ever began.

US-China Relations
Trump: Has an Extremely Good Relationship with Xi Jinping

Donald Trump has had a long and “fantastic” phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he writes on Truth Social.

He lists a number of topics that were discussed, including trade, defense, Trump’s upcoming trip to China in April, Taiwan and the Ukraine war.

“The relationship with China and my personal relationship with President Xi are extremely good, and we both realize how important it is that they remain so,” the president writes.

Trump’s tone and actions towards China have been hostile for long periods, not least during last year’s escalated trade war.

As has happened several times before – most recently yesterday with Colombian President Gustavo Petro – Trump now seems to have softened after a phone call or personal meeting with a world leader with whom he has been in a war of words.

He does not provide further details. The talks are expected to continue tomorrow.

EU agrees on 950 billion euro loan to Ukraine

EU countries have finally agreed on a 90 billion euro loan, equivalent to 953 billion kronor, to Ukraine. TT reports.

The details have been worked out since the loan decision was made at the summit in December. The money will go towards both military and civilian spending over the next two years.

“Today’s agreement shows that EU countries continue to act decisively in support of Ukraine and its people,” writes Makis Keravnos, Minister of Finance of the Council of Ministers’ presidency country Cyprus.

Warmer Greenland faces economic transition

Greenland had its warmest January ever – a clear effect of climate change, reports Reuters.

“The measurements show a warming four times faster than the global average,” says Jacob Hoyer, head of climate research at the Danish Meteorological Institute.

In the long term, this will affect the economy in several ways. Fishing, Greenland’s economic mainstay which accounted for 23 percent of GDP last year, is being affected by the warmer waters. Lack of snow and ice is also affecting the tourism industry.

In the future, rare earth metals, of which Greenland has large untapped deposits, are expected to become increasingly important for the economy. As the island warms up, they become easier and more profitable to excavate.

It also risks making the island the subject of an ever-increasing geopolitical power struggle – as has already been demonstrated in the crisis with the US.
