Trump's USA

ICE operations
Majority of US voters: ICE used excessive force

A majority of American voters are critical of ICE's shooting death of Alex Pretti, and do not see the authorities' version of the incident as credible, according to two recent polls.

55 percent of voters believe that ICE used excessive force when Pretti was shot dead, and 16 percent do not think they did, according to an Ipsos poll according to CNN.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows that 61 percent of voters do not believe that the Trump administration has given an honest picture of the course of events.

Republicans are more critical of the shooting of Alex Pretti than the previous one, when Renee Good was killed. In mid-January, 54 percent of them stated that they believed that the agents used necessary force when Good was shot dead in his car, but only 33 percent think that the violence against Pretti was justified.

ICE efforts
Two out of three Americans think ICE has gone too far

Two out of three Americans believe that the immigration police ICE has gone too far in its efforts against illegal immigrants. This is shown by a survey commissioned by the Marist Institute for NPR.

This is an increase of eleven percentage points since last summer. Dissatisfaction with ICE has increased in particular among Democratic voters and voters who identify as independents.

But even among Republican voters, a third say that ICE has gone too far. However, the same number also believe that the efforts are not extensive enough.

The survey also shows that 56 percent of voters are dissatisfied with Donald Trump's work as president. 51 percent say they are very dissatisfied, which is the highest figure that Marist has measured since the question began to be asked in this way in 2017.

The war on the media
Strong reactions: "A reprehensible pattern"

Yesterday, the news came that the respected newspaper Washington Post is laying off a third of its staff and, among other things, scrapping its entire sports editorial team. The reactions have been many and strong.

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren believes that the decision is political and an attempt to slap President Donald Trump, who according to Warren "attacks journalism everywhere." She said this in a conversation with journalist Don Lemon, who was arrested during protests in Minneapolis a few days ago, writes The Wrap.

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on the same page, writes The Guardian. She believes that the layoffs are part of "a larger, reprehensible pattern" of decisions that are eroding editorial staff across the United States.

“Let’s make no mistake: we live in a time when the First Amendment to the US Constitution is under severe pressure here at home,” she said at the Washington Press Club’s annual dinner for congressional reporters yesterday.

DN’s editor-in-chief Peter Wolodarski is also critical. He tells Dagens Media that it is clear that owner Jeff Bezos “has lost his interest in serious journalism.”
