One-third to leave prestigious Washington Post
The influential American daily The Washington Post is laying off a third of the company's employees.
The announcement was made by editorial director Matt Murray during a digital meeting on Wednesday. The cuts affect a third of the staff and affect all editorial departments; the sports department is being closed and the number of foreign correspondents is being reduced.
Digital messages will be sent out in person, with the subject line stating whether the employee has lost their job.
Rumors of cuts have been rife at the newspaper for several weeks. Journalists have appealed directly to the owner, Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos, to not complete the measures.
The newspaper is known for several historically important revelations, including the Watergate scandal.
