Protests in Venezuela – want to see Maduro released
A month after the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro, thousands of protesters gathered on the streets of the Venezuelan capital Caracas on Tuesday. AFP reports.
The march was called by the government and many of the participants are state employees. Several carried placards of Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores.
“We feel confused, sad and angry. There are many emotions,” 58-year-old municipal employee Jose Perdomo told the news agency.
Maduro and his wife were taken out of the country by US soldiers on January 3 of this year. Maduro is charged with, among other things, drug terrorism, conspiracy to commit a serious drug offense and possession of a machine gun. He faces 30 years in prison if convicted.
Petro and Trump positive after meeting at the White House
US and Colombian presidents Donald Trump and Gustavo Petro seem to have buried the hatchet for the time being after a meeting at the White House, AFP reports.
– My impression of the meeting a few hours ago is first and foremost that it was positive, Petro tells reporters after meeting Trump behind closed doors.
Trump also seems to be pleased.
– We are not the best of friends, but I was not offended because we have never met before. I did not know him at all, and we got along very well, he says.
The meeting came after a year of war of words between the two presidents, when Trump, among other things, accused Colombia of pumping cocaine into the US and threatened a military intervention like in Venezuela.
