Both sides proclaim themselves great victors: “100 percent – no doubt”
The ceasefire that Iran and the US have agreed to means nothing more than a “total and complete victory” for the US. This is what the country’s President Donald Trump tells AFP.
– 100 percent. There is no doubt about it, he says.
Trump claims, among other things, that China has had a hand in the game and that it is Beijing that persuaded Iran to negotiate a peace. He also says that the US and Iran have a list of 15 points on which they agree on most things. Just an hour earlier, Trump wrote that the list consisted of ten points.
At least as certain of victory is Iran’s National Security Council, which proclaims itself the victor and claims that it is forcing the US to make several major concessions.
Iran has published a list of ten demands, including that the US lift its sanctions and end its aggression. The AP notes that the list in Farsi also includes Iran being allowed to enrich uranium, a burning issue that is missing from the English list.
Trump called the list of demands overnight a starting point for continued negotiations. In the interview with AFP, he says that the issue of Iran's uranium should be covered in a peace agreement.
- It will be taken care of in a perfect way, otherwise I would not have agreed to the deal, he says.
Iran's Ten-Point List
- Not to repeat its "aggression" against Iran
- Iran's continued control of the Strait of Hormuz
- Allowing Iran to enrich uranium
- Lifting direct sanctions against Iran
- Lifting indirect sanctions against Iran
- Withdrawing all UN Security Council resolutions
- Withdrawing all IAEA resolutions
- Paying compensation to Iran
- Withdrawing US troops from the region
- Ending the war on all fronts, including against the "Islamic resistance in Lebanon"
