Middle East Crisis Peace Talks

Sources: The agreement also includes a ceasefire in Lebanon

The so-called agreement of understanding that is currently on the table in the Iran war involves a total halt to the fighting in the region – including in Lebanon. This is stated by two sources with insight into the negotiations for CBS News.

In addition, it means that the ceasefire is extended by 60 days, and that Iran commits to opening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring shipping to pre-war levels within 30 days, according to the sources.

The agreement also reportedly means that Iran promises never to develop nuclear weapons, and that the country's enriched uranium is exported according to a yet unspecified mechanism that both Iran and the United States accept.

What happens to Iran's frozen assets and the sanctions reportedly depend on how well Iran complies with the other points in the agreement.

According to the United States, an agreement is close, but according to Iran, it is not.

Israeli Criticism of Deal: “Bad for the Region”

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid accuses Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of failing to influence the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran, reports the AP.

He calls the details that have emerged “disturbing.” He refers to Israel’s low influence in the negotiations and criticizes Netanyahu for letting Washington negotiate a potential deal.

“The deal is bad for Israel, bad for the region, bad for the citizens of Iran,” says Lapid.
