The Pope's Call: Slow Down the Development of AI
The rapid development of AI risks spreading disinformation, focusing on conflict and leading the world into endless war. This is what Pope Leo XIV means, who is urging the world's countries to slow down the development of AI, reports Reuters.
"What is needed is a more active political commitment that can slow things down when everything is accelerating," he writes in his first encyclical "Magnifica humanitas."
He calls for, among other things, independent oversight and proper frameworks from politics.
Pope in historic apology for slavery
Pope Leo XIV apologizes for the role that the Holy See has played in legitimizing slavery.
"For this, in the name of the Church, I sincerely ask for forgiveness," he writes in his first encyclical.
Previous popes have apologized for Christian involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, but an official apology for the role played by other popes has not been made until now.
Leo XIV also condemned what he calls “new forms of slavery,” referring to the workers who operate AI systems, an issue that has preoccupied the Pope during his first year.
