After two fatal shootings in the space of a week, the Trump administration is ordering the immigration police ICE to stop vehicle checks.

Monday's shooting death of a 26-year-old Colombian man in the state of Maine has drawn new sharp criticism of the US immigration police - whose employees also shot and killed a Mexican man in Houston a few days earlier.

However, some exceptions can be made if, for example, there is an arrest warrant or in cooperation with other authorities, a source said.

The two shootings are taking place as part of President Donald Trump's administration's tougher crackdown on immigration in the United States. At least nine people have been killed so far in the operations. Over five days in late June, ICE arrested more than 10,000 people.
