The skeleton of the Tyrannosaurus rex “Gus” was sold on Tuesday for the equivalent of 484 million Swedish kronor at Sotheby’s in New York. This makes “Gus” the most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold at auction.

The record sum of 50.1 million dollars was sold after a ten-minute bidding between seven bidders. The buyer is anonymous.

The skeleton of “Gus” was found at rancher Gary “Gus” Licking in South Dakota in 2021. It is considered one of the world’s most complete fossils of a T-rex and consists of 183 bones.

Two years ago, an almost complete skeleton of a Stegosaurus was sold for around the equivalent of 470 million kronor.
