Tons of garbage have collected in a waterway outside Manila in the Philippines.

This after several days of heavy rain.

A contributing factor is Typhoon Dolphin, which also hit China.

On Tuesday, an extensive clean-up operation began in Baclaran in Parañaque City.

Officials are working to remove the large amounts of garbage and debris that cover parts of the waterway outside the capital.

In pictures from the scene, a person is seen standing in the garbage with garbage up to his neck. Personnel are also working from a boat, completely surrounded by garbage, while excavators are being used to clear the garbage.

The garbage is said to have washed in from Manila Bay in connection with the heavy rain that accompanied the strengthened southwest monsoon.

Typhoon Dolphin did not hit the Philippines directly, but helped to intensify monsoon rains across the country. The storm later moved into eastern China, bringing heavy rains, writes AP.

In Shanghai, 313 millimeters of rain fell in one day, which is the highest figure since measurements began 150 years ago.

At Shanghai's airports, nearly a thousand flights were canceled on Monday, and even more the day before, as a result of the storm. Subway lines and more than 100 trains were also canceled, according to the Chinese state

More than a million people have been evacuated. Chinese authorities have also warned of serious flooding and landslides.

The typhoon has also swept past Japan in recent days, causing power outages in more than 44,000 buildings. The islands of Okinawa and Amami in the southwestern part of the country are the most affected.

According to local authorities in the Philippines, the waste has been accumulating for several days of heavy rain. The situation was worsened when a so-called “trash trap” – a barrier that captures floating garbage – was removed, writes the Philippine newspaper Philstar.
