Suu Kyi allowed to meet with the Red Cross – but will not be released
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has again requested that Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi be released from house arrest. The request is rejected by the military junta.
However, last week the junta allowed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to meet with 81-year-old Suu Kyi.
It was the first time she was allowed to have contact with an independent international organization since she was deprived of her liberty five years ago, and the visit can be seen as an attempt by Myanmar to escape criticism.
But the request for release is rejected.
"Although the government has commuted her sentence based on humanitarian considerations, the question of a full and unconditional release should only be done in accordance with the law," reads a statement from the country's Foreign Ministry.
Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been detained since the junta overthrew her government in a coup in 2021.
