Dead climber may be allowed to return home – after 30 years
Known as "Green boots" and a landmark for other climbers, his frozen body has been lying just below the summit of Mount Everest for over 30 years. Now the body will be recovered.
India is preparing an expedition to bring down the well-known body that has been in the so-called death zone on the Tibetan side of the mountain since 1996, reports the BBC, among others.
The identity of the body with the neon green boots has not been confirmed, but it is believed to be Indian border police officer Dorje Morup. He is said to have frozen to death in a snowstorm, shortly after reaching the summit and turning back.
Between ten and twelve experienced climbers are needed for the dangerous operation.
Morup's family will give him a final resting place in his hometown in Ladakh. According to the son, the green boots will be preserved as a memory of his father.
